Our Mission
We, The Ohio University Game Show Appreciation Society, are the only registered student organization at Ohio University to celebrate the vastly under-rated genre of television game shows.
From back in the early days of television, to the Quiz Show Scandals of the 1950's, the Game Show Renaissance of 1975, to the present day marvels of Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?, Millionaire, and Minute To Win It, we leave no letter unturned, no wheel unspun, and no question unanswered.
Since the founding in March 2004, GSAS has had a dual mission:
- To promote the genre of television game shows thru discussions and game playing.
- To lobby CATVision to add GSN to their standard on-campus channel lineup.
While we are still striving for the latter, the former is the strongest part of our existence.
At our meetings, a new weekly agenda will be discussed. Usual agenda topics consist of the status of the Treasury, progress on upcoming events, and other opportunities for our club. Following the agenda, we watch an episode of a selected show from our extensive library. The library consists of contemporary shows, such as The Price is Right, as well as true classics, such as the original Twenty-One from the 1950's. Should there be enough time after the episode, club members are invited to stick around and play a home version of one of the many shows we discuss. Some club favorite games are Blockbusters, The $25,000 Pyramid, Scrabble, The Joker's Wild, and Press Your Luck.
In the past, the GSAS presented a Game Show Event for the entire campus population. We have taken it upon ourselves to make our events as close to the classic show as possible in all respects. We have built set pieces and props, written scripts and questions, and even gone so far as to program computer simulations of our games. Shows we've done in the past include Match Game, The $25,000 Pyramid, Card Sharks, Wheel of Fortune, and Jeopardy!.
Our signature event continues to take place during Moms Weekend in Spring Quarter. The event: OU Price is Right. Since this is our signature event, this takes the longest to plan and present. Our 2007 show was the best on record. We sold out Baker Center's Theater (191 people) and gave away over $1600 in prizes; including a Nintendo Wii and an XBox 360. Our 2009 show was the first to be professionally recorded, thanks to the crew at Athens Video Works.
In conclusion, to all of our Officers, Senior Members, and 2010-2011 Newcomers, welcome to The Ohio University Game Show Appreciation Society!
